About
About Sounding Line
Sounding Line is a small, independent writing project about personal money. We explain the mechanisms behind budgets, reserves, debt and growth, and we give you methods you can repeat with your own figures.
Why a sounding line
Before a ship crossed unfamiliar water, someone dropped a weighted line over the side and read the depth. The method was simple, and it kept vessels off shoals. Money works the same way. Before you commit to a plan, measure what you actually have, and what the water looks like around it.
Who we write for
We write for adults who earn a steady income but were never shown how the pieces fit together. That includes people who share finances with a partner, people building a first reserve, and people who want to understand a loan offer before they sign it. You do not need to be an expert, and you do not need to feel behind to begin.
How we work
- We start with mechanisms. A rate, a balance and a payment are explained before any example uses them.
- We name what each choice costs, including the cost of doing nothing.
- We keep examples general, so that you can apply the method to your own figures.
- We say when we are unsure, and we correct mistakes in the open.
What we will not do
- Recommend specific products, lenders, exchanges or investments.
- Predict prices, markets or interest rates.
- Accept payment for a place in a guide, or sell sponsored sections.
Questions and corrections are welcome. Write to us, or go straight to the field guide.
